About Volunteering at the Hospice

There’s a group of people at the Hospice who cannot be praised too highly for the contribution they make, they are a vital link in the chain of success – they are the Volunteers!

My name is Barbara Cronin and I joined the Hospice as Volunteer Services Manager in September 2003. Having been a volunteer myself at my children’s Primary School and then for 8 years with a Scout Group in Inner City London I am fully aware what it means to give up precious time supporting a good cause.

I am responsible for all the volunteers, both at the Hospice and Hospice retail outlets.  The recruitment programme is a continuous process, we are always looking for new volunteers. There is so much people can do to help but I don't think that they realise it, most people have a special skill and can get involved in all sorts of ways such as driving patients to and from the Limes Day Unit, helping in the gardens, working in the kitchen - see volunteer opportunities for more information.

Volunteers gain lots of experience being at the Hospice, those that have not worked for a while feel it is a good way of being in a working environment and gives a chance to build up confidence. Some come to gain experience for a career in palliative care, others have retired and simply wish to offer help to the community.

All volunteers are asked to complete an Application Form and supply two references, (which are taken up). Hospice volunteers are invited to come to the Hospice for an informal interview and a tour and must complete a Criminal Records Bureau disclosure check before they can be placed with a department.

Retail volunteers are usually interviewed at the shop of their choice but are encouraged to come to the Hospice for a tour.

Hospice volunteers have a day of Induction Training before they start and other training is carried out depending on the area that they join. Retail volunteers have Induction Training within the shop, but are invited to attend an Induction Day at the Hospice if they wish to. Volunteers do not need any special experience, just a commitment of approximately 4 hours a week. All volunteers are asked to sign a Confidentiality Statement.

Some people have a misconception of the Hospice - it’s not a depressing place. Yes we do have some tears and sadness but mainly it is full of fun, laughter and those feelings that we are here to provide, CARE, COMFORT AND DIGNITY.”

Come along and see what we are all about ... no strings attached.
